Sven offers Hargreaves sanctuary at Leicester... if he can prove his fitness
Owen Hargreaves has been offered the chance to resurrect his career at Leicester City - if he can prove his fitness.
The injury-plagued 30-year-old posted a video of himself training alone in Vancouver on YouTube earlier this week. And now Hargreaves’s former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson has invited the midfielder to join his ambitious Championship club.
England expects: Sven Goran Eriksson has invited Owen Hargreaves to join him at Leicester
Leicester boss Eriksson said: ‘I would take him at once if he’s fit. He’s a great - he was, at least - a great, great football player. He hasn’t played in a long time.
‘He’s been very, very unlucky the last year, so I don’t know if he is interested to go on playing. I would take him at once to start training with us.’
Point to prove: Hargreaves released videos of himself on YouTube exercising
Hargreaves is a free agent after being released by Manchester United, who paid £17million for him in 2007. He made just 39 appearances for United because of tendinitis, knee trouble, hamstring and shoulder injuries.
Leicester have the money to back up their ambition and last night agreed a £5.5m deal with Reading for defender Matt Mills. Eriksson’s next target is Bristol City striker Nicky Maynard.
