Sunderland lead the chase for Manchester United defender Brown

Sunderland have emerged as favourites to sign Manchester United defender Wes Brown by offering him a four-year deal.
Black Cats boss Steve Bruce has tried to see off Stoke, Aston Villa and Everton by giving the 31-year-old a long-term contract that his rivals were unwilling to match because of the defender's injury problems.

Brown wanted to stay in the north-west but is set to be persuaded by Bruce's commitment.
Sunderland have been the busiest Premier League club in the transfer window by signing Connor Wickham, Ji Dong-won, Seb Larsson and Keiren Westwood.
Bruce sees Brown's knowledge and positive influence in the dressing room as vital to guiding his young squad.
