Wrangle: Antonio Valencia wants a new long-term deal

Manchester United’s hopes of tying Antonio Valencia into a new long-term deal have faced a setback.
David Gill revealed on Friday that he was confident a new agreement could be made but it is understood negotiations have now been shelved until the start of the season.
The Ecuador winger, who flew home from United’s tour of the US with an ankle injury this week, had seen initial talks in June hit a snag over image rights.
Valencia, 25, is halfway through the £50,000-a-week, four-year deal he signed after a £16million move from Wigan Athletic in 2009 and was praised by Sir Alex Ferguson for his quick recovery from a broken ankle last season.
Meanwhile, United’s £30m target Wesley Sneijder has suggested he is open to offers from the club, who want him to take a hefty pay cut.
The Inter Milan midfielder said: ‘I’m happy to train every day with my colleagues and play my games for the fans and everyone at the club. There’s always a chance something will happen but we’ll see.’
Inter coach Gian Piero Gasperini said: ‘I appreciate that there has been an offer but it’s with Inter that the negotiations should take place.’
